Marinella Ferrara

Architect, PhD in design, visual and applied arts, associate professor of Industrial Design at the Department of Design, Politecnico di Milano. She teaches Product Design and History of Design and Technology in the School of Design and is a Faculty Member of the PhD in design. In 2015, she founded MADEC, the Material Design Culture Research Center, and is the director of research that focuses on the relationship between materials and design as a strategy for design-driven innovation in history and contemporary times. Her current focus includes the new, bio and smart materiality related to the new making and crafting. Since 2011, she has been the editor-in-chief of the online scientific journal PAD, Pages on Arts & Design, (padjournal.net) and an ADI Permanent Design Observatory member. Top Innovation Award (TIA) by CIDA (China Industrial Design Association) in the category Top 10 Educator for Industrial Design in 2019; ADI Design Index Mention of honour and Compasso d’Oro selection for the book Material that Moves. Smart Materials, Intelligent design written with Murat Bengisu (Springer, 2018). Author of more than 150 scientific publications, she is internationally involved by the National Research Councils (NWO, ANR and FCT) in the scientific research evaluation panel and Grant awarding.
